early 2000s Everything I say is metaphor. Everything you say is metaphor, whether you know it or not. Everything Jesus said, or the Pope, or Einstein said is metaphor. We live in Sentiens, a subset of the universe creature, a subset (or at least dependent on) Pleroma, the physical universe. The Physical universe is “territory”: another metaphor: because it’s in the universe of symbols.
Anyway: semiotics is the study of human’s use of symbols. Semantics is an important subset. I see Korzybski’s distinction between territory and map as crucial to semiotics, crucial to human survival; but humans don’t. Gergory Bateson reported that we can’t: psychologists have studied our inability in this regard: the unable studying inability. I’m unable too, and I know it; but: I understand it better than … anyone I’ve ever tried to discuss it, or anything, with.
Here’s another try:
God: a metaphor: however many screaming Yahoos are willing to separate your head from your neck to insist that their metaphor, their confusino of type, is real; and you’re a menace. Another truth teller — would be map-improver — is a menace: to human certainty, human power.
Actual “things” and events are the territory; what we say about them are “maps.” What authorities say about them are maps.
Authorities always want to dictate what map is official: and they always want to keep the map of the flat earth after Columbus and Magellan have sailed over hell and gone: or, rather, they want to time the admissions about errors, not Galileo, not jesus, not Abelard … no pk.
What I mean by judgment is a metaphor: the metaphor God represents the territory despite any errors in the map. Judgment Day is a metaphor: when the alliances of conservative dishonesty is seen naked, defenseless, against the Truth: the actual territory.
Judgment Day is the imaginary time when truth wins, and all arbribrary authority loses.
2011 05 13 Kleptocracy trains its klepbots, through its churches, its schools, its bureaucracies, to regard yesterday’s kleptocracy as regressive, dishonest, fooling, corrupt; but today’s kleptocracy, this one, as courageous, progressive, honest, reliable … godly, Christian, right, rational, reasonable … truthful, responsible …
Science is a set of methods some honest geniuses have evolved, bit by bit, to test maps against territories, falsifying the faulty maps, improving them: backing away from error.
But authority’s job is to insist on the faulty maps, and to persecute the would-be improvers of the maps.
By homeostasis the 180 IQs, more numerous than the 200 IQs, however few there are, gang up on the 200 IQs. Meanwhile, the 160 IQs gang up on the 180s, the 140s on the 160s, the 120s on the 140s, and the 100s on the 120s (and the 140s, and the 160s …) Meantime, the 100s are also ganging up on the 80s, and on the 60s, and on the 40s … while keeping the 20s in a basket where they haven’t been hit over the head.
In Christianity, Jesus, an “IQinfinity” (metaphors, all metaphors), gets sandbagged by the kleptocrats while the 100s, and the 110s, and the 90s … and the 50s, and the 190s … stand with their thumb in their ass.
But never mind Jesus, that’s all corrupted by superstition, by authority … history, however unreliable, however manipulated by kleptocrats, the Snopes-trialers managing Harvard and Harvard’s faculty and Harvard’s alumni … Socrates will do, or Galileo.
And never mind history, facts will come out at Judgment! kleptocrats helpless to lie any longer.
Metaphors, all metaphors: even this one: the stupid, the dishonest, the corrupt .. the false … will inevitably fail. At some point the earth will warm up no matter what equivocations the federally funded false scientists attempt.
When bad money has replaced good money, there will be no money: not so long as the supervisors rule.
2011 09 15 The judge, the lawyers, decide which evidence is admissible. The lawyers argue which testimony is currupt, false, to be dismissed.
Politically funded scientists have evidence presented to them by bureaucrats: like Catholics having God presented to them by priests! No, no, don’t listen to that priest; he’s not in our control!
If we had God’s manuscript for the Bible, we could trust it. But we don’t, we only have human contaminations.
And it just occurs to me: is that why kleptocrats contaminate all evidence the moment they get a change? So God will have to throw out All the Evidence!
If God has to throw out all the evidence, why then he can’t convict us of anything, can he?
