Gay Marriage

… Social Survival / Family / Family Interference

News! Gay Marriage! NY approves!

I quote some responses from the article:

“We made a powerful statement,” Cuomo said. “This state is at its finest when it is a beacon of social justice.”

The leading opponent, Democratic Sen. Ruben Diaz, was given only a few minutes to state his case during the Senate debate. “God, not Albany, settled the issue of marriage a long time ago,” said Diaz, a Bronx minister. “I’m sorry you are trying to take away my right to speak,” he said. “Why are you ashamed of what I have to say?”

The Catholic Bishops of New York said the law alters “radically and forever humanity’s historic understanding of marriage.”

“We always treat our homosexual brothers and sisters with respect, dignity and love,” the bishops said Friday. “We worry that both marriage and the family will be undermined by this tragic presumption of government in passing this legislation that attempts to redefine these cornerstones of civilization.”

Legal challenges of the law and political challenges aimed at the four Republicans who supported gay marriage in the 33-29 vote are expected. GOP senators endured several marathon sessions, combing through several standard but complex bills this week, before taking up the same-sex marriage bill Friday.
The bill came to the floor for a vote after an agreement was reached on more protections for religious groups that oppose gay marriage and feared discrimination lawsuits.

“State legislators should not decide society-shaping issues,” said the Rev. Jason McGuire of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms. He said his organization would work in next year’s elections to defeat lawmakers who voted for the measure.

Diaz said, “God, not Albany, settled the issue of marriage a long time ago.” That statement used to wash when people didn’t know how man-manipulated the “Bible” is. Truth now is, we don’t know God’s position, not as a group: we don’t have any manuscripts from God: and there’s no consensus on what he’s told individuals. Till God speaks, clearly, verifiably, all such claims must be taken as fraud.

Diaz complained that someone was taking away his “right to speak”? Huh? Explain that one to me, please.

The Catholic Bishops of New York said the law alters “radically and forever humanity’s historic understanding of marriage.”
Amen! Exactly as it should!

“We always treat our homosexual brothers and sisters with respect, dignity and love,” the bishops said Friday. “We worry that both marriage and the family will be undermined by this tragic presumption of government in passing this legislation that attempts to redefine these cornerstones of civilization.”
Someone help me out here: bishops? Roman Catholic bishops! have “always” treated “homosexual brothers and sisters with respect, dignity and love”? Really? Can such a statement be verified in more than 1% of possible instances? 2%?

“We worry that both marriage and the family will be undermined by this tragic presumption of government in passing this legislation that attempts to redefine these cornerstones of civilization.”
Now that’s true: but haven’t churches long presumed the same?
I would love it if evolution shaped society without interference from either state or church! I would love it if everyone minded their own business: by keeping both churches and states from forming! Then nature could rule without interference. Evolution would streamline: at least so I believe.

“Redefine … cornerstones of civilization”! Yes, Sir. That’s exactly what’s going on. And if civilization won’t adapt, then it should have no expectation of survival. (And neither should God!) (or me!) (or you!)

“State legislators should not decide society-shaping issues,” said the Rev. Jason McGuire of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms. He said his organization would work in next year’s elections to defeat lawmakers who voted for the measure.
Wow! Now that is a radical idea!

Well-off Americans are far more likely to be in stable marriages than are the less affluent. This creates a damaging social cycle — economic inequality is breeding family instability even as family instability is deepening economic inequality.

I’ve long loved the idea that social conservatives are actually scuttling whatever it is they credit themselves with protecting. The church destroys connection with God, institutionally approved “science” prevents science from developing. In a word survival is connected to intelligence and intelligence is connected to honesty. And around we go.

Social Survival

About pk

Seems to me that some modicum of honesty is requisite to intelligence. If we look in the mirror and see not kleptocrats but Christians, we’re still in the same old trouble.
