Blame the Victim

The psychology of blame may differ between individual and institution. The insurance company may blame an arsonist before it decides which checks it does or doesn’t have to write. The kleptocracy, if it calls the Iroquois savages, are then justified (in their own minds) in stealing their democracy. They weren’t good enough for their own government! We exterminated them. They were savages!

American kleptocrats bought Africans enslaved and marketed, but then invented an infinity of blames for their victims: they’re stupid, childish … immoral, unclean …

One reason the Nazi shouldn’t feel too bad about the Jews is the Jew had found the Nazi to be no more human than the Nazi found the Jew! He’s unclean …! (meaning he ate pork).

In 1989, heading back north after wintering in the Everglades, I paused in Sebring to hide from traffic through the Easter weekend. I fell in love with Highlands Hammock, wound up extending my stay: I’m still here: being too poor to move is only part of the reason I remain: woods, lakes, streams, river … a girl … make more reasons. My first landlord outside the state park, Dick, tried to befriend me, tried to introduce me to other tenants. But I couldn’t stand the introductions. One guy didn’t wait for five minutes to get to the nitty gritty: insulting
n-, [Bowdlerizing K., 2016 08 03 Offensive terms go dosido in fashion.] form a common ground of prejudice. Dick stopped recommending my company to people but persisted himself in testing my Americanness. He drove me through a ghetto, invited me to express my disgust at the lazy, shiftless, no-good n-s who couldn’t even mow the lawn of their own “property.” I offered Dick some information gleaned from here and there: English science writer Nigel Calder, for example: European slave traders had found cities of black Africans centuries ago as populous, clean, prosperous as Amsterdam. The slavers burned the cities to the ground.

If Martians burned Belaire, then dragged the Belairans off to Aldeberan, stripped them of their family, their language, their gods; who would be surprised if the mixed breed descendants of such slaves were a little bit cautious, a little bit skeptical, about anything they might try to do? Dick looked at me in astonishment: And you believe that!? he demanded!

Belief based on evidence stands no chance against the ad hoc, whatever-we-can-get-away-with epistemology of the kleptocrats.

Anyway, that all can be revised till it’s much better. But meantime, see the magic: if you can name the god, you can control the god;
if you can blame the victim for his victimization, why then nothing you do is your fault!

About pk

Seems to me that some modicum of honesty is requisite to intelligence. If we look in the mirror and see not kleptocrats but Christians, we’re still in the same old trouble.
