Irish Famine

My mother’s grandmother was a ward of Sir Robert Peele, Prime Minister of England. My home page in its succession of forms has apologized for him because of his connection with police, hierarchically imposed law enforcements … English cops were called Peelers, Bobbies … But I just learned of something else I have to apologize for: Everyone knows that the potato crop failed in the 1840, that many in Ireland starved.
Peele heard about the disaster. Not only did he do nothering, he dismissed Irish problems with an ethnic slur. He was a Celt himself, understand: Scots.

It’s reported in Bill Bryson’s Home: History of Private Life. I’ll find it and quote it here.

About pk

Seems to me that some modicum of honesty is requisite to intelligence. If we look in the mirror and see not kleptocrats but Christians, we’re still in the same old trouble.
