Hitler’s Third Reich would last for a thousand years. That’s what Hitler promised his Aryans. A bit more than a decade is what they got. Hitler rose in the early ‘Thirties; Hitler crashed in the mid-Forties: more than long enough, don’t you think?
George Washington promised the Mohawk that they could have and hold some small percentage of their territories: forever: for as long as the grass is green. George Washington took other huge chunks away from them a short time later. Isn’t it amazing how governments — and governors — are exempt from having to keep promises?
(Except to their sponsors.)
(And that’s never been the people.)

The best work, by far, I’ve seen to date on the subject of sustainability, a buzz word of the last few years, but an important one, is Jared Diamond’s Collapse. Indeed it is the only comprehensive work I have seen or heard of.
