Mission: challenge our glib confidence about deep epistemological issues
We train our children about right and wrong. If we were right about right and wrong, then shouldn’t all children agree? But they don’t. One child believes that whatever is good for General Motors is good for the United States and whatever is good for the United States is good for all. Another believes that whatever is good for Israel is good for the Jews and whatever is good for the Jews is good period. Another believes that the only good heretic is a dead heretic. Or n-, injun, jew.
[Bowdlerizing K., 2016 08 02 To me a syncopated word is even more offensive than the straight vulgar term.]
We are the righteous.
Or so we were taught.
A rational approach to right and wrong would require that goals be stated and terms defined, something no culture has ever been too punctilious about./p>
Those who lack all idea that it is possible to be wrong
can learn nothing except know-how.
My thoughts on the subject are: various goods can be evaluated only by comparing their goals (with the goals then scrutinized for accuracy and viability), then debated into a necessarily ad hoc hierarchy.
For example, many in our secular society would agree that whatever is good for mankind is right? But isn’t the biosphere a “higher ” category than mankind? Isn’t life itself a higher category yet? (Where does God fit in?)
There always has to be a so-long-as provision. What’s right for me may pass muster for me so-long-as it isn’t in conflict with what’s right for a category higher up.
(Have you ever heard a more egregious utterance?)
What if what’s right for General Motors and what’s right for the United Sates is wrong for the biosphere? Then General Motors and the United States should rethink their priorities. If they don’t, they should be stopped by whoever has their priorities straight.
What if the latter have no power? Then we’re all up shit’s creek.
I knew that father had been right,
even when he couldn’t have known he was right
anymore than I could have known I was wrong.

2000 01 11 I’m overdue here for a module on the factitious plural of this word: rights! Just a word for the moment: notice that only kleptocracies talk about rights. There’s no such thing in nature. Notice also that kleptocracies are god-like with respect to this imaginary item: the kleptocracy giveth; the kleptocracy can also taketh away. or forget. or change its mind. all with no immediately apparent result to the kleptocracy itself.
We’d be wiser to demand behavioral regularities than words, promises, laws, documents …
Demand? Who are we to demand? We the People are just deluded schmucks: told that we’re in charge the way the kid is told he’s riding the bicycle that you’re holding the seat of.

2006 02 01 I make the scrapbook without time to develop a single entry. When I can I’ll enter something about corollaries to agreed wrongs. All agree it’s wrong to kill: is it wrong to gang together to prevent killing? Can gangs prevent killing without themselves escalating the killing? Watch out for cheap caps thoughtlessly covering volcanos. The capped volcano may be more destructive in the long run than the volcano left alone.
Beware of applying the ethics of individuals to groups.
Simultaneously: if it’s wrong to murder, how is it right to cooperate with conscription so the state’s enemies, victims, can get killed?
Extension … companion … evil twin: [fragment, data lost
If you follow pk’s perennial points about extension / intension you may be able to fill in, I’ll try to return to guess myself.]
2015 11 06 Decisions about right and wrong are made by people so incompetent on the subject that they do not know and cannot be told what would comprise rational discussion. Oh, they hold discussions, televise them, but only after they’ve crucified Jesus, terrorized Galileo, and interrupted, jailed, and censored pk. They keep records of the discussins but seldom of the interruptions.
