The Pope is resigning! this February!
I’ll develop two important angles on this news: catch the gist of both before changing channels.
1) If the Church represents God, and if God is really god, and god is true, then we should all care very much. None of us should make a move, least of all the Pentagon, without checking with god, with God, with the Church, with the Pope … Again, if there’s a legitimate succession, connection … In that context, who’s pope, what’s the condition of his health, his mortality, his stamina are important concerns.
On the other hand, if we’re all Nazis, atheists, kleptocrats, what does it matter whether Tweedledum is called Tweedledee?
2) This is the same but in a completely different costume: if God is real, and if the Church represents this God, if the Church has it right, has never made a mistake, if the Church’s Bible truly is the word of this God, no typos, no miscopyings … then, all we need to know is what it says. Political reactions are irrelevant.
If God doesn’t want women priests, then stop bringing it up.
If abortion is wrong, then stop wheedling about how inconvenient it is for this particular pregnant rape victim.
If on the other hand we care more about our comfort than God’s law, then why are we talking about God at all? Who cares what the truth is? If we don’t like the truth we can vote against it.
Vote?! Chesuz, pk, you can be so obtuse!
No one needs to vote against unwelcome truths. Just leave people alone and they’ll be blind to whatever they don’t like all by themselves.
More on my perennial subject of the Church will come in a new post: The Church’s Bet, will relate to Pascal’s Gamble.
