Career Fixing

One reason industrialized kleptocracies need state-directed coercive schooling is to meet the quotas of industrialized planning. The managers calculate that they need so many executives, so many managers, and everybody else … labor.
And it’s always more yesterdays that are planned for. Today’s parents plan tomorrow’s children in terms of what seemed advantageous yesterday. The school will teach waltzes and polkas … while the GIs are jitterbugging, doing the lindy-hop. The public will be drilled in penmanship; while the innovators are word-processing. Those with no concept of what a computer is will make sure than everyone’s children are drilled in long division. Every blue collar kid will know how to shoe a horse just as the horses are shoved into luxury niches by Model T Fords everywhere.

Modern times have seen neighbors asking children what they want to be when they grow up. Previous ages never asked such questions: your father was a farmer, you would be a farmer.
This first draft is tugging off in several directions: related, but I’m not yet tying them together. Try tying them, and extrapolating what I haven’t mentioned yet yourself, though I’ll get to it as I can. First though I continue to jabber a couple more notes to myself on directions to cover.
The universities want the students to commit to some specialty by age nineteen or so. The blue collar people are already specialized: that guy sweeps, the other guy picks up the garbage. Michael Carleone’s son Tony want to sing operas, Michael wants him to become a lawyer first: then he can sing if he wants. Shove everybody into the state-mandated niches, the niches designed by planners cloning yesterday’s plans into tomorrow’s. But the actual market, the actual economy has always taken routes other than those planned for.

School’s Purpose

About pk

Seems to me that some modicum of honesty is requisite to intelligence. If we look in the mirror and see not kleptocrats but Christians, we’re still in the same old trouble.
