2000 10 05 I added this quick little bit to my Academic Bestiary [ie: pk School Stories].
The true purpose of schools: to disestablish the individual, to subvert freedom, to train a private work force at public expense, to familiarize a consumer public with shoddy scholarship, managed history, to palm off skills (like arithmetic) as disciplines (like mathematics), to torment the talented, to punish truthfulness, to castrate the last bit of gonads from the imperfect eunuchs, to encourage the public to despise the intellect and its representatives … and most of all: to manage information.
As a fellow English instructor once said to me, “The poverty of the school teacher’s body is matched only by the poverty of his mind.”
Disestablish the Individual: I do not mean to imply by that phrase that the individual has ever been established. Man has been a social species for a long time now and social species cannot tolerate individuality in bulk. Hermits can be as individuated as they are able to manage but the pack homogenizes. Some societies, one or two rather familiar to us, talk about honoring individualism, but talk is cheap, the claim easily falsified.
Social species cannot tolerate individuality in bulk.
Neither am I saying that societies are automatically “wrong” (counter-evolutionary) or that “individuals” are automatically “right” (in accord with the Tao). What I am saying is that societies cannot be trusted when declaring their motives. We are forced to “trust” our society but survival ultimately demands accountability for one’s own ass. (Will God really buy excuses that the priest (or the teacher or the cop) lied to poor innocent you? Fork him into hell, the moron.)
Nevertheless: schools militate to disestablish the individual: prevent the individual from becoming established: ratify the society, no matter how pathological.
