Intimidate Honesty, Independence, Intelligence

2001 08 24 Ordeals like the Scopes trial carry a lesson for teachers whichever way the verdict goes, whatever happens in the appeals. Intellectual integrity has no status so long as the group can thump on sacred objects. As my module on From Cradle to Conformity explores, the great majority of domesticated predators learn that the group will not tolerate independent integrity long before grade school is well under way. Making liberal movies about an incident decades after the fact does alter the ubiquity of the fact. It’s easy to see Moscow’s errors from the distance of Washington. How about seeing Washington’s errors from the distance of Washington?
As I’ve reported elsewhere, in 1969 there were approximately twenty members of Colby College’s English Department. That’s a humongous department for a small college. Over that year ten of us had at one time or another stood on the Chapel steps in silent protest against US conduct in Vietnam. At the end of the year, that ten was fired: half the department! The school newspaper protested nine of the ten: it didn’t know, hadn’t been informed, of my illegal firing. The department said that politics had nothing to do with it: end of the inquiry. I went and founded FLEX: bypass all administrations. The other nine I presume went on to make other teaching applications: or skipped over into real estate. Of those who found other positions, how many would try protesting ever again? How many teachers of science who would have liked to teach evolution decided that discretion was the better part of valor after seeing Scopes’ reward?
Schools have never been run by free intellects. You’ll do well in Washington only by waving spears at enemies too far away to see you.

Administrations in all human societies are medieval, feudal, managed in darkness. Putting a new face on the old dummy changes nothing.

School’s Purpose

About pk

Seems to me that some modicum of honesty is requisite to intelligence. If we look in the mirror and see not kleptocrats but Christians, we’re still in the same old trouble.
