Subvert Language

2001 12 Yesterday on the tube I heard the smiling newscaster report casualties by “friendly fire” with a straight face. Language has always changed. Words elevate and denigrate in status, in meaning, in usage (module coming on that phenomenon). Some rationalities prevail; new absurdities are born. But I doubt if the best archeologist-anthropologists past or future could find a (past) society which attempted to manage language like the present. This is I believe new: since the 18th Century: English and French rationalists from Swift to Descartes are to blame.

What would Swift or Descartes have made of “friendly fire” if they’d encountered it. I don’t blame Swift or Descartes for schools, but modern schooling certainly comes in their wake. And preposterous state and media diction comes with it. I say that only a schooled public could be maneuvered into using or tolerating such coinages.

I leap to my conclusion: a major purpose of school is to make us stupid enough to repeat things smack in the face of evidence: We are a free society, We own the land, God loves us because he honors our virtueThe soldiers were killed by “friendly fire”: so friendly it tore them apart.

School’s Purpose

About pk

Seems to me that some modicum of honesty is requisite to intelligence. If we look in the mirror and see not kleptocrats but Christians, we’re still in the same old trouble.
