Hooray, my rants on reverse engineering school’s purpose, that is, deducing, inferring the unadvertised, often hidden reasons kleptocracies coerce schools on us, their hands in our pocket, their claws on our children, have now been posted here, bringing at least that much of the deposed Knatz.com up to date. There will be other thoughts to add. There are data bases on the subject on my old Mac to import. This will be the gathering bin, the subject’s scrapbook.
School / Shul
2013 05 22 Schools, modern schools, compulsory schooling, were forged in Germany, Germany trying to join, then lead, then dominate the Industrial Revolution. The United States jumped on that bandwagon with jackboots.
Illich said that a free people with a large population would want a cybernetic data base to track resources, to match people by interest, and to sort feedback on the resources. I offered to do it.
One day in 1970, ’71, Noreen and I had set up our literature table in front of the Met Museum, a favorite spot (and Noreen had been an Illich follower before I heard of him, that’s how and how come she tracked me so quickly), and a guy, a mature man with a beard and black coat and so forth, clearly an Orthodox Jew, stood studying my main flyer. Finally he looked me in the eye and said, “Unnecessary.”
Unnecessary. Shul is all we need. Not school; shul.
Shul. Temple. House of worship, house of study. Repository for the culture’s cosmology, laws, ritual, magic …
(As Illich said, school is a culture’s reproductive organ.)
I didn’t disagree with this guy, I wouldn’t have argued for digital record keeping with a caveman, living in a group of forty. But this Jew wasn’t getting it. We’re hundreds of millions, controlling billions: and controlling them through state-run propaganda factories.
