Some time back Mad published a Don Martin book and prefaced it with a joke “biography.” “Don Martin was born in a log cabin he helped his father to build.”
My favorite joke had Martin joining the army and distinguishing himself by blowing up a German bridge, killing twenty German soldiers and capturing two German generals and a colonel. (I reinvent the details, not having the source handy.) “Unfortunately,” the narrative continues, this was in 1963, not 1943. When Don got out of the stockade …
See? Time makes more difference than just changing day to night.
In Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf the protagonist seeks his old pacifist professor as he feels war tighten around him: a war between man and machines. He finds his professor: shooting at people in cars! I thought you were the great pacifist, he declares. (Again, I’m paraphrasing.) Yes, says the professor; but that was then, this is now.
The protagonist dreams on. He finds Mozart. Mozart is playing some scratchy recording of his music: full of noise: hiss, needle skips … Mozart laughs and laughs. I found the professor funny, funny, funny. I found the laughing Mozart to be right: but horrible, horrible, horrible.
If you were born two hundred and fifty millions years ago, you’d better know how to swim and to breath under water. There’s be no food or shelter for you on the land. If we’re born in the future, who knows what we’ll need: a gas mask? A built-in heater (beyond blood)? A lobotomy?
Sustainable life, from bacteria to trees to butterflies, has to have the intelligence to adapt to their environment: an environment that changes with time. Trouble is, human intelligence has added so many new changes that no one can follow it. Oh, we follow the part that it’s good to kill Indians in 1730 and good to kill Germans in 1943 (or good to kill Frenchmen, Poles, Jews in 1943 … if you’re German) … good to oppress women almost any time … but not in 1970. We know that Father knows best in 1955 but that Father became a schmuck by 1965: kick him in the balls if you want folks to laugh.
Trouble is, human culture has added so so many virtual environments. How many gods there are in the actual universe has nothing to do with how many gods there are in your culture. And your culture is different at T1, T2, T3 …
