Stages of Maturity

Oh, those poor mayflies: they only live for a few hours. Nonsense: they’ve already lived for a good part of a year: in other forms. The egg is alive before it becomes a fetus, the sperm is alive before it fertilizes the egg. Some creatures live in a coccoon before they become a butterfly. The baby is three quarters of a year old before it’s born.

Methuselah lived nine hundred year
Methuselah lived nine hundred year
Who calls that livin’
When no gal will give in
To an old man that’s nine hundred year?
Gershwin

Ah, but how about the maturity of the life? the complexity? the quality? …

The eight year old boy swears he will never have anything to do with girls. Kid, till you’ve been through puberty, you don’t know nothin’. It’s alright: no one takes the boy seriously. I remember my own fury at being smiled at indulgently: by women! Intolerable! by old women! “adult” baby sitters! (all of fourteen or so.)

Whoops, this just got posted before it’s ready. I’m workin’ on it. [“Just”: when was that? 2000?]

About pk

Seems to me that some modicum of honesty is requisite to intelligence. If we look in the mirror and see not kleptocrats but Christians, we’re still in the same old trouble.
