We should all remember as towers fall and icons tarnish: baseball is not golf. Baseball is not a gentleman’s game. In baseball, if you don’t get caught, you’re not guilty: just like in business (and nearly everything else). What must it be like to be a baseball player, to get away with this and that, and then suddenly to be found guilty, years later? And steroid use is just the latest example. Don’t you bet that more than one role model told Ty Cobb to come sliding with his spikes up? And what about racism? Who could have gotten along yesteryear if they weren’t a racist?
Bobby Jones’ famous penalty was self-inflicted.
Now major market US sports want to police themselves: for steroid use. That’s like Junior Johnson, while he’s still a bootlegger, asking the judge to let him, from then on, watch his own speed over the Appalachian night roads: revenuers in terrified pursuit. Why, Junior: seems to us that that’s what you’ve been doing all along: watching your own ass. Not that pk trusts the judge, or the public, or the people: which doesn’t mean I trust MLB to police itself better in the future than it did in the past. And even if it does better this time, everyone watching differently from before, that doesn’t mean that it deserves the chance. When the institution is caught cheating, that should be the end of the institution. People still want spectator sports? Fine. Let them rebuild them from the ground up. I believe in evolution through extinction. Which does not mean that I assume that generationX is better than generationW: or better than generationA. I do think it would be better for all to commit suicide than for kleptocracy to prevail another single day.
2014 08 04 I’m binging on Mark Wahlberg movies. I went to Shooter because of the Stephen Hunter source novels, then I went to Pain & Gain because of Mark Wahlberg. Very funny, evil out loud laughable.
Point I’ve probably made somewhere, but to be sure: As Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez are vilified for steroid use, do Sly Stallone, Dwayne Johnson get off untarnished? Ah, confusing society and logic is pathetically weak humor.
2014 08 05 Yeow, the doctor just injected me with steroids! for what she called “trigger finger. I asked her if I should anticipate some bad publicity, write Alex Rodriguez a sympathy letter, apologize to Barry Bonds.
The doctor, VA hospital at Bay Pines, was assisted by another doctor even cuter than she was: I invited both of them home with me. “Do you want us to bring the needle?” she joked. No, you can leave that behind, just bring your cute self.
It’s so neat, this woman, twenty-something, thirty at the most, getting flirted with by a guy about to be seventy-six: and taking it effortlessly in the right spirit.
There are lots of other comments on steroids in our culture around K.
