The following appeared in / Deschooling /; I resurrect it among Institutions.
School is what I today term a gathering institution. Schools, militaries, jails, shearing pens, cattle cars, abattoirs … they’re all gathering mechanisms. Hook and line may catch one fish; trawlers can scoop up whole shoals. Kleptocracies build trawlers to snare whole populations.
Once a school or a police or an army has gathered all the children, or all the male children, or all the pubescent females … then the population can be examined and any of various decisions executed. gods can be crucified, teachers can be poisoned, poets can be impoverished: beyond what nature was doing to them anyway.
Cavemen could have killed Socrates. I doubt they would have waited till he was seventy. But Athens had the power to make it official. They also had writing, by Plato’s time, and so their infamy still lives. Jesus didn’t seem to write any more than Socrates did; but Luke, John … they wrote.
Or, Socrates, Jesus did write. And they burned it. So we get Plato, Luke, John instead.
